Monroe High School cheer coach resigns amid investigation into alleged inappropriate behavior with a minor

Rumors began in the fall, but no credible evidence was found after two investigations. On June 7, administrators received "evidence that the rumors could be true."

MONROE, Mich. — A Monroe High School cheer coach has resigned amid an investigation into allegations of inappropriate behavior with a minor.

The unnamed cheer coach resigned due to the allegations, Monroe Public Schools said in a statement regarding the situation Thursday.

The allegations began in the fall as rumors and were investigated by the district and the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, but no credible evidence was found, the district said.

A second investigation took place later in the year involving the sheriff's office, district and child protective services after rumors resurfaced, the district said, but again no credible evidence was found.

On June 7, Monroe High School administration "was provided with evidence that the rumors could be true," according to the statement. The coach was placed on paid administrative leave and the sheriff's office was contacted.

"Student well-being is a priority in our district, and concerns of this nature are taken very seriously. Our high school administration took the appropriate steps each time rumors surfaced, and along with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office investigated thoroughly," Monroe Public Schools Superintendent Andrew Shaw said in the statement. "In each case, until the most recent, there was no supporting evidence."

The exact nature of the supporting evidence in the most recent case was not disclosed.

"People want to have all of the information before the investigation is complete and will jump to conclusions without all of the facts or information," Shaw was quoted as saying in the statement. "I ask that the community allow the Sheriff's Office to complete the investigation. These matters take time."

According to the statement, the high school's other cheer coach "has also left the program" and Shaw said both coaching positions were filled following the resignations, making for an entirely new high school cheer staff.

"Due to the sensitive circumstances of this situation involving a minor, Monroe Public Schools will have no further comments regarding this matter," Shaw said.

The district did not specify if the allegations involved a student or a member of the cheer team.

"The case remains under investigation," Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough said. "Upon completion, it will be sent to the Monroe County Prosecutor for review."
