TOLEDO, Ohio — A judge sentenced a Toledo businessman to two years of probation for his involvement in a city council bribery scheme.
According to court documents, Nabil Shaheen took a bribe and then worked as an informant for the FBI while it investigated former council members Tyrone Riley, Larry Sykes, Yvonne Harper and Gary Johnson, as well as now-deceased attorney Kevin Mitchell, for involvement in a corruption scandal in 2018.
Shaheen was not ordered to pay a fine or restitution.
Charges were filed against Shaheen on May 4, alleging he knowingly influenced Riley with things of value, namely cash and meals and received "Riley's influence, support and votes as a member of Toledo City Council," according to court documents.
Helmick in early September sentenced Sykes, Harper and Riley after they pleaded guilty in December to accepting bribes while in office.
Sykes was sentenced to four months in prison and one year of probation, Harper was sentenced to one year and one day in prison and Riley was sentenced to two years in prison and one year of probation.
Also in September, Helmick denied Johnson's requests for an acquittal and a new trial after he was found guilty in June of taking bribes while in office. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 25, 2025.
