HENRY COUNTY, Ohio — A Henry County grand jury on Wednesday indicted the owner of a Napoleon dog rescue on criminal charges for alleged animal cruelty.
Alexandria Rigg, 22, was indicted on five counts of cruelty to companion animals after authorities earlier in December executed a search warrant at the Zesty Misfits rescue on Park Street in Napoleon, removing more than two dozen animals the Henry County Sheriff's Office says were "in unsanitary living conditions."
The charges allege the animal cruelty occurred between Oct. 17 and Dec. 10, the day of the warrant.
But, the warrant was not the first time authorities had visited Zesty Misfits. The sheriff's office says deputies and Ohio Department of Agriculture agents had previously been informed of the operation, investigated and found "several dogs inside and unsanitary conditions," which they asked the rescue to resolve.
On a follow-up visit, authorities found the conditions had only deteriorated.
Twenty-four dogs, two cats and two lizards were ultimately removed and are in the care of the Henry County Dog Warden.
