North Toledo shooting injures one person

The victim was shot in the hallway of an apartment building, police say.

TOLEDO, Ohio — One person was injured in a north Toledo shooting Thursday morning.

Police responded to the intersection of Locust and North Erie Streets at approximately 10 a.m. for a shooting.

A Toledo police lieutenant on scene told WTOL 11 that one person had been shot inside the hallway of an apartment building in the 600 block of Locust Street. The victim is in critical condition. In a police report, authorities identified the victim as a 19-year-old male.

According to police, an off-duty officer was inside the building at the time and came across the scene of the shooting quickly.

Multiple Toledo police cruisers were at the scene. Police were investigating the scene and are speaking to possible witnesses and suspects.

In a police report, TPD said they arrested one person at the scene: 20-year-old Kaveon Vann. According to police, Vann was fleeing the scene at the time of the shooting, and was taken into custody by the same off-duty officer who first responded to the shooting.

A court document indicated Vann allegedly was "in possession of a firearm that was shot inside of the location." Vann also was allegedly seen by witnesses and on video surveillance throwing the firearm after fleeing the location.

Vann, however, has not been charged directly in connection with the shooting. Court records state Vann was charged with having weapons while under disability and tampering with evidence.
