CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Division of Police is investigating a carjacking involving an Ohio State assistant football coach.
The incident happened at approximately 2 p.m. on Monday in the parking lot of the Ginn Academy, the academic home for a number of players on the Glenville Tarblooders. The 28-year-old assistant coach, who hasn’t been identified, was at the school when police say he was held up at gunpoint and his car was stolen.
Cleveland police say they acted quickly. With the help of their helicopter, they spotted the stolen vehicle driving fast and erratically.
The chopper followed until four suspects jumped out and ran. Officers then caught up and arrested them.
After news of the incident, we talked to Cleveland City Councilman Mike Polensek who chairs the city’s safety committee and is a longtime board member for the Ginn Academy. He told 3News, "We've got these terrorists running our streets, terrorizing our citizens, and they've got to be held accountable. There [have] to be consequences."
Polensek added he wants to see the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) back patrolling Cleveland's streets. For months, OSHP troopers assisted officers in operation surges, but it appears that has ended.
WKYC reached out to the OSHP, which said the patrol does not have any more initiatives planned with Cleveland for the rest of the year. They stressed they are always willing to assist upon request, if resources are available.
The incident remains under investigation.
