WOOD COUNTY, Ohio — Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers shot and killed a suspect during a multi-county pursuit early Saturday, after authorities said the suspect fired rounds and aimed a firearm at law enforcement.
According to a press release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP), the Defiance County Sheriff's Office was pursuing a suspect in a Chevrolet HHR who failed to stop for a traffic violation. OSHP troopers joined deputies in the chase near US 25 and SR 15 in Defiance County.
The pursuit continued, troopers said, through Henry and Wood counties, where the driver then drove into a field near SR 199 and SR 582 in Webster Township.
OSHP said the driver left the vehicle and fled on foot with a handgun and began firing rounds. According to troopers, the driver pointed his gun at the troopers "which resulted in a trooper-involved shooting".
OSHP said they began rendering first aid. The suspect, identified in the press release as Donovan L. Joyner, 26, of Defiance, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
No officers were seriously injured in the incident, OSHP said. A passenger in the suspect's vehicle, who authorities said was not involved in the shooting, was taken to a local hospital for a medical issue, OSHP said.
OSHP and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation are investigating the incident.
