Police: 1 killed, 1 detained and taken to hospital after shooting in Swanton

The shooting happened inside a vehicle at an unknown location, said the Swanton mayor. The passenger was pronounced dead and the driver was taken to the hospital.

SWANTON, Ohio — One person was pronounced dead at a scene in Swanton Thursday evening after a shooting happened inside a vehicle at an unknown location, the village mayor said in a now-deleted social media post.

The Swanton Police Department said that at approximately 5:49 p.m., they received a report of two injured individuals on South Main Street near Garfield Avenue.

When law enforcement arrived on the scene, they located a vehicle pulled off the roadway on South Main Street. Police said they discovered that one of the male occupants was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Swanton police, a second male occupant was detained and later transported to the hospital for treatment. It is unclear what injuries the second male occupant had.

In the now-deleted social media post, Swanton Mayor Neil Toeppe said, "It appears that while traveling through the village the driver stopped to provide aid to the passenger."

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was on the scene of the incident and was involved in the forensic investigation according to Mayor Toeppe's deleted social media post.

The identity of the victim and person who was detained have not been released.

The Lucas County Coroner's Office says they are handling the body of the victim, but haven't made a ruling on the details of their death at this time.

Swanton police said the incident remains under investigation and are asking anyone with information regarding the matter to contact the Swanton Police Department.

Swanton resident Emily Wheeler said the incident was something the small village of Swanton is not used to.

"This is not something you hear about every day," she said. "Last crazy thing to happen in Swanton was a train crash, so not common at all."
