MONROE COUNTY, Michigan — Monroe County authorities are searching for a driver who struck a pedestrian and fled the scene of the fatal crash Saturday night on Smith Road.

The crash was reported at 11:59 p.m. Saturday in Bedford Township.

An early investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office determined that 43-year-old Erika R. Todd, of Erie, was walking eastbound on Smith Road near the shoulder while wearing dark clothing.

While walking, Todd was struck by a vehicle of unknown make and model traveling eastbound, which then fled the scene, according to the sheriff's office. After being struck, Todd came to rest within the east and westbound lanes of travel.

Todd was then struck by a 65-year-old driver from Toledo, Ohio heading westbound, and again by a 19-year-old driver from Erie heading eastbound. The drivers involved in the second and third crashes both stopped on the shoulder of the roadway after hitting Todd.

Todd died at the scene.

The driver from Toledo, the driver from Erie and their passenger were not injured and were released.

It is currently unknown whether alcohol or speed are factors in the initial crash.

The sheriff's office is asking for the public’s help in locating the vehicle that first struck Todd. The crash is under investigation by Lt. Brian Quinn and deputy sheriffs Cody Carena and Nicholas Burkhart from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office Traffic Services Division.
