WOOD COUNTY, Ohio — The Wood County Sheriff's Office said one of its deputies shot a man during an altercation early Sunday morning.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies responded to 8401 S. Dixie Highway in Rudolph just before 1 a.m. for a health and welfare check after Wood County dispatch received a call saying that the person at the address, later identified by the sheriff's office as George Taylor, was suicidal.
Deputies said that upon arrival they attempted to de-escalate the situation but during these attempts, Taylor allegedly pointed a rifle at a male deputy.
The sheriff's office said that the deputy, later identified by the sheriff's office as Sam Miller, fired his handgun once in response, shooting the individual.
Responding officers said they immediately attempted first aid, including CPR, but the victim died.
The identity of the deputy who fired his handgun has also not been released.
The Wood County Sheriff's Office requested BCI to investigate the shooting incident. The Wood County Sheriff's Office has not stated if the deputy will be placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
Editor's note: This story has been updated to include the identity of the individual killed and the deputy involved.
