Authorities fatally shoot man in Michigan; sergeant also shot during incident

Authorities in Jackson and Lenawee counties say the man, who has not been identified, shot at law enforcement during a pursuit and struck a police sergeant.

JACKSON, Michigan — Law enforcement shot and killed a man in Jackson, Michigan, on Wednesday. The man was suspected of shooting his brother in the hand in Lenawee County earlier in the afternoon and allegedly shot a police sergeant during a later pursuit, according to press releases from two different law enforcement agencies.

The Lenawee County Sheriff's Office says deputies responded to a domestic violence incident in the 500 block of Pentecost Highway in Franklin Township around 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

Two brothers, 31 and 34, were physically fighting at the residence when the 31-year-old produced a handgun and allegedly shot the 34-year-old in the hand, according to Lenawee County sheriff's deputies. The 34-year-old was hospitalized with minor injuries.

Lenawee County then notified Jackson County around 5 p.m. that authorities were tracking the suspect into Jackson County via a tracking device on his vehicle. The Jackson Police Department located the suspect vehicle on the northeast side of the city and authorities approached it.

The suspect then fled in the vehicle "at a high rate of speed." Authorities began pursuing the vehicle and the suspect allegedly began firing "multiple shots" at pursuing law enforcement, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office said.

Several vehicles and homes were struck by gunfire during this pursuit.

The suspect, who has not yet been identified, allegedly shot a sergeant from the Jackson Police Department through the arm. According to the Jackson sheriff, the bullet traveled through his arm and into his body.

The injured sergeant was shot at 5:41 p.m. on the east side of the city. The sergeant, who has not been identified, was hospitalized and is "currently in good condition," the sheriff's office said Wednesday night.

Multiple law enforcement agencies were then able to stop the suspect. "Multiple shots were fired during the attempt to apprehend him" and he was eventually "shot and incapacitated," according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.

No additional officers or deputies were reported as being shot.

The sheriff's office says lifesaving efforts were performed at the scene and the suspect was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The sheriff's office does not say how many times the suspect was shot, where he was shot at or which law enforcement agencies fired the shots.

One deputy and an unspecified number of officers "involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending internal investigations by their respective agencies," according to the Jackson sheriff.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office and the Jackson Police Department have requested Michigan State Police conduct a criminal investigation into the incident, the Jackson Sheriff's Office said.

MSP said in an update it had found "numerous pipe bombs" in the suspect vehicle and believes the suspect "may have thrown these out of the vehicle during the pursuit as there were explosions along with gunfire."

"If you see these items do not pick them up. Contact 911 so that the appropriate personnel can be dispatched to handle the items," MSP said.
