Police: Officer shoots armed suspect in downtown Toledo

Toledo Police said the person suffered a graze wound to his leg after being shot by an officer near Orange Street and Superior Street.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A police officer shot an armed suspect in downtown Toledo on Thursday, Toledo police said.

TPD said that SWAT officers saw a male walking across Cherry Street towards the Vistula Manor Apartments when they saw the outline of a handgun in the man's jacket pocket. Officers attempted to make contact with him before he ran away on foot.

One officer continued to chase the suspect on foot, while another pursued him in their patrol car. Police said that the suspect went down Huron Street and behind the TARTA bus station while officers made commands for him to get on the ground.

The man then continued towards The Blade building near Orange Street and Superior Street where police were able to catch up with him. TPD said that the officer pursuing on foot met the suspect as he rounded the corner with a gun in his hand.

Police claim that the officer fired one round from his department-issued handgun before the suspect dropped his firearm and was taken into custody.

The man, who has not yet been named by TPD, suffered suffered a minor graze wound to his leg and was transported to the hospital. Charges against the suspect are also pending, according to police.

No Toledo Police officers were injured in the incident and the officer who fired his weapon will be placed on paid administrative leave, as per TPD policy.

Police said that the involved officers' information and body-worn camera video will be released at a news conference in the near future.
