TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo police have named three suspects in the shooting death of a 16-year-old Springfield High School football player in December.
Two of the suspects, 18-year-old Grant Lynn and a 17-year-old, were arrested and charged with murder Wednesday for their alleged involvement in the death of Eric "EJ" Scott, according to the Toledo Police Department.
A third suspect, 17-year-old Ashton Neal, has a murder warrant for his arrest. Neal is not in custody, police said.
Scott was shot twice in the torso outside a residence in the 4200 block of Amsterdam Road in west Toledo on Dec. 20, 2023. He later died at the hospital.
Court documents state that Lynn drove three of his friends, including Scott, into the neighborhood and Scott saw someone "he did not like." According to detectives, Lynn parked the truck he was driving and his three friends exited the vehicle.
Court documents said that they approached the male they saw and fired multiple rounds at him. During the shooting, Scott was struck by gunfire that detectives said came from his friends.
According to court documents, Lynn then moved his truck to pick up his three friends, including Scott, and drove to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Lynn was indicted on eight charges Monday, including aggravated murder, two counts of murder, attempt to commit aggravated murder, two counts of felonious assault, discharging firearm on/near prohibited premises and improperly discharging firearm into a habitation.
Lynn entered a plea of not guilty in Lucas County Common Pleas Court and his bond was set at $650,000.
Scott was a junior at Springfield High School and a cornerback for the Blue Devils football team. After his death, Scott's coach and peers remembered him as a leader and a respected member of the community.
