Tiffin Calvert teacher accused of inducing panic after 'threatening note' found in school last month

A grand jury indicted Rhonda Huffman on two counts of felony inducing panic after an investigation identified her as a person of interest.

TIFFIN, Ohio — A Seneca County grand jury indicted a Tiffin teacher on two counts of felony inducing panic after a note was found in the hallway of the Tiffin high school last month that referenced "someone having a gun inside the school and threatened those present."

The Calvert Catholic Schools academy and high school campuses were placed on lockdown on May 7 and later released for the day in response to the note. No weapon was found in the building during a search.

The Tiffin Police Department on Tuesday said an investigation into the May 7 incident and a similar incident about three weeks prior identified Rhonda Huffman, 47, of Tiffin, as a person of interest.

Huffman, who police say has been employed by the district as a teacher since 2018, was placed on administrative leave by the school administration after the investigation identified her as "the prime person of interest."

The grand jury indicted Huffman on June 6. She was served with a summons on indictment "and will make an initial appearance in Seneca County Common Pleas Court in the near future," according to Tiffin police.

Police say detectives reviewed surveillance footage from the area in the school where the note was found and interviewed student witnesses to narrow down a time frame, ultimately identifying Huffman as a potential person involved.

A re-investigation of the prior, similar incident resulted in Huffman becoming the focus of that investigation, too, police said.
