Toledo man indicted by federal grand jury for alleged robbery of postal employee

In March, Damere Wilson, 20, allegedly robbed a letter carrier of their postal key and more than 200 checks totaling thousands of dollars.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A Toledo man was indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday on multiple charges for allegedly robbing a postal employee earlier this year while the letter carrier was on a delivery route.

According to the Department of Justice, Damere Wilson, 20, was indicted on charges of robbery of mail, money, or other property of the United States, stealing mail collection box keys, and mail theft.

According to court documents, Wilson approached the letter carrier on March 12 while the carrier was delivering mail at the Piccadilly Apartments in Oregon. The DOJ said the letter carrier "indicated a hard object was shoved into their back" and Wilson demanded keys to the mailboxes.

Wilson's vehicle was seen leaving the scene of the robbery on surveillance video, leading to a search warrant executed at a duplex on Maplewood Avenue in Toledo, according to court documents.

During the search warrant, the DOJ said the postal key that was stolen from the letter carrier and more than 200 checks totaling thousands of dollars were recovered.

"If convicted, Wilson's sentence will be determined by the court after review of factors unique to this case, including his prior criminal record, if any, his role in the offense and the characteristics of the violation. In all cases, the sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum and in most cases, it will be less than the maximum," the DOJ said.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Frank H. Spryszak for the Northern District of Ohio.
