TOLEDO, Ohio — A Toledo man was sentenced to prison Thursday in the 2020 shooting death of a 19-year-old in east Toledo.
Andre Overton, 24, withdrew his previous plea of not guilty and pleaded guilty to one count of murder. He was sentenced to 18 years to life in prison.
Police said they responded to a shots fired call in December 2020 in the 1200 block of Mason Street. When officers arrived, they found a woman, later identified as Daneajia Smith, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. She died on the scene.
The coroner's autopsy ruled her death a homicide and determined the cause of death to be three gunshot wounds to the head.
According to police, Overturn admitted to a detective in December 2020 that he did shoot the victim.
