TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo police have charged a man with two dozen felony counts of vandalism after numerous reports in recent weeks of vehicle damage, many from car owners who parked at the downtown Vistula garage.

According to a report from Toledo police, officials have received reports of rear windshields broken with rocks, chunks of concrete and bricks. Several of the damaged vehicles were police detective vehicles and other unmarked police cars, the report said.

Vehicles belonging to Unison Health also have been damaged while parked along Woodruff Avenue and two other vehicles were damaged while parked along South Huron Street, police said.

The investigation into the vandalism led police to develop a description of a suspect: A man who wears a coat with fur around the hood, carries a blue backpack and wears white shoes.

Shortly after 5:30 p.m. Thursday, detectives observed a person who fit that description in the area of Cherry Street and Greenbelt Parkway, police said. Officers stopped the man, Patrick J. Newton.

Police then questioned Newton and said he admitted to some of the recent vandalism incidents, but not all of them, they said.

Officers found pieces of concrete gravel and broken glass in Newton's pockets, police said.

Police also said Newton has a criminal background of similar behavior.

He was charged with 24 counts of felony vandalism and taken to the Lucas County jail, police said.
