OSHP: Trooper injured in crash during multi-county pursuit

The pursuit started on northbound I-75 in Allen County and ended at the rest stop on I-75 in Wood County near U.S. 6.

WOOD COUNTY, Ohio — A trooper with the Ohio State Highway Patrol was injured in a crash during a multi-county pursuit Thursday morning that ended in Wood County.

According to OSHP, a trooper with the Lima Post attempted to stop a vehicle just after 6:30 a.m. for going 86 mph in a 70 mph zone on I-75 northbound near State Route 103 in Allen County.

OSHP said the vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit began. The pursuit was briefly terminated near County Road 99 in Hancock County as it entered a work zone, but troopers re-engaged once the vehicle was out of the work zone.

Troopers conducted a "rolling roadblock" by boxing the vehicle in near State Route 613 where OSHP said the suspect vehicle briefly stopped before fleeing again.

Just before 7 a.m., the vehicle entered the rest area just south of U.S. 6 in Wood County, crashing into the north side of the parking lot before the suspect fled on foot.

According to OSHP, a trooper attempted to enter the northbound on-ramp from the rest area when his patrol car was hit by a northbound semi-tractor trailer. The trooper and the semi-driver were transported to the hospital with minor, non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect, identified by OSHP as Jaevon L. Johnson, 22, of Detroit, was arrested by officers from the Bowling Green Police Division.

OSHP said Johnson was impaired and suspected drugs were found in his vehicle. He was incarcerated at Wood County Jail for failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer, a third-degree felony.

OSHP said additional charges are pending and the incident remains under investigation.
