Arrest made in deadly Turnpike crash

Thursday's deadly crashes killed four people and injured multiple others.

LUCAS COUNTY, Ohio — One person has been arrested in connection with Thursday's deadly Turnpike crashes, an Ohio State Highway Patrol spokesperson confirmed Friday. 

According to court records, 24-year-old Istam Naimov, of Philadelphia, was arrested by the Ohio State Highway Patrol Thursday at approximately 6:24 a.m. He was booked at the Lucas County jail shortly after 3 p.m. on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide; vehicular manslaughter: negligently. This charge, a second-degree misdemeanor, was filed in Maumee Municipal Court.

Naimov was arraigned in court Friday morning where he pleaded not guilty and a judge set his bond at $25,000. Istam's next hearing is scheduled for Oct. 18.

WTOL 11 reached out to OSHP, who said Naimov was arrested in relation to Thursday's crashes that killed four people and injured several others.

According to charging documents in Maumee Municipal Court, Naimov was operating a commercial vehicle near milepost 50 and struck stopped traffic "while failing to maintain assured clear distance ahead." One person was killed as a result of the crash.

Thursday's three crashes occurred within an hour of each other and involved 12 vehicles. The crashes closed down a 15-mile span of the Ohio Turnpike in Fulton and Lucas counties for most of Thursday. The crash also resulted in the spillage of sulfuric acid.
