Teen facing multiple charges in shooting that injured juvenile at Franklin Park Mall

Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz confirmed to WTOL 11 that Toledo police believe the shooting was accidental.

TOLEDO, Ohio — UPDATE: On April 10, Lucas County courts received a competency evaluation from the Court Diagnostic and Treatment Center. This evaluation stated the teen suspect is not competent to stand trial. A hearing is scheduled for Monday, April 15 at 9 a.m. at Lucas County Juvenile Court for the judge to address the next steps in this case.

Original story below:

Two people were shot and suffered non-life threatening injuries at the Franklin Park Mall early Tuesday evening, according to Toledo police.

Police said there "is no known active threat at this time" and the shooting is under investigation in a social media post just after 8 p.m.

Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz also confirmed to WTOL 11 that TPD's "initial conclusion" is that the shooting was accidental.

In a Toledo police report issued Wednesday, law enforcement said crews were in the mall's food court when they heard a gunshot. Police located a 16-year-old hiding near a business at the corner of Sylvania Avenue and Talmadge Road suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg.

Police located a second teen near the DSW store who was also suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim, 15, was transported to the hospital.

The 16-year-old was charged with felonious assault, carrying concealed weapons and inducing panic, according to Toledo police. As of Wednesday morning, they are still in the hospital. It is WTOL 11 policy to not name minor suspects unless they are being charged as an adult.

The suspect appeared in juvenile court Thursday morning using crutches. They were denied release to parents and will remain in custody until the next scheduled court appearance, which is Jan. 11 at 8:30 a.m.
