DEFIANCE COUNTY, OH (WTOL) - A local Veterans services office helped make sure a local Civil War veteran was properly being remembered.
Joseph P Robinson served as a corporal in the 124th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, but he never received the proper military veteran headstone.
Then earlier this year, an ancestor of his discovered the mistake and 111 after his death the Defiance County Veterans Services Commission helped place the military headstone at his grave site.
The program is no cost to family members and fulfills the promise of the Federal government that no veterans grave will go unmarked.
"I think people appreciate the history and it honors that they served in uniform. You know, less than 7 percent of our population will have served in armed forces, and that is one of the promises that we made and that we keep; we don't let the grave go unmarked," said Tanya Brunner with the Defiance County Veterans Services Commission.
To add even more interest to this specific story, right next to Joseph Robinson is the grave of William Colgan who served during the Revolutionary War.
Colgan's veterans marker was placed by Veterans Services as well.
