Defiance DORA approved by city council

Outdoor refreshment area allows beverages outside or inside other businesses

DEFIANCE, Ohio — Another local community has embraced the popular downtown outdoor refreshment area.

This time, it's Defiance.

Earlier this week, Defiance City Council approved the proposed DORA for their downtown.

With the refreshment area now established, it opens the door for more outdoor events, seating for restaurants, and the ability to bring beverages into businesses.

Kirstie Mack, executive director with the Defiance development and visitors bureau says they are currently designing window decals for businesses to show if they are opting in or opting out of the open carry area.

And the defiance DORA is a large one, 96 acres stretching from the Maumee River south to the old middle school, and from Jackson Street west to Clinton Street. It even encompasses the historic Fort Defiance grounds.

"We're looking at the big picture regarding some economic development opportunities. We want to be sure that if anybody wants to come in the area and they want to be a part of this and make sure that they have the opportunity," said Mack.

With the Defiance DORA receiving city council approval, it will legally go into effect in 30 days, but will first need final approval from the state liquor board. So the tentative plan is to hold a grand opening event some time in mid July.
