The United States Geological Survey reported a 4.0 magnitude earthquake was felt across northern Ohio this morning.

The quake occurred over Lake Erie just north of Eastlake, which is east of Cleveland.
There have been confirmed reports of buildings shaking due to the earthquake.
A magnitude 4.0 earthquake means it is felt but only causes minor damage. The highest magnitude is 8.0 or greater.
Earthquakes are caused by movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action.
The earthquake probably came as a shock to all who felt it, as Ohio isn't usually considered an earthquake-prone state.
But Ohio History Central says Ohio has recorded at least 200 earthquakes over 2.0 magnitude since 1776.
Ohio's earthquakes are concentrated in two primary zones, according to Ohio History Central: The Western Ohio Seismic Zone (Allen, Auglaize, Mercer, and Shelby Counties) and the Northeastern Ohio Seismic Zone (from eastern Cuyahoga County east to the Pennsylvania border and south to the Akron area).
