Oregon City Schools serves final meals for community, food still provided over the summer

Oregon City Schools sent home their last meals before the school year ends, but meals will still be served during the summer.

OREGON, Ohio — It's almost summer break for the school districts in northwest Ohio, which means meal programs are starting to wrap-up as well.

That doesn't mean families and students can't get meals during the summer.

Every Monday for the last nine weeks, Oregon City Schools would provide meals for the whole week. Monday was the last day for the school district.

Leaders say that during this time, they have provided more than 75,000 meals for their community.

"We started right when they initially closed in March and we started with 600 that week. We grew to like 3,000. Then, it was 1,000 a week and we're basically ending doing about 9,300 a week," Food Service Director Vicki Laurell said.

Meals during the summer will now be provided through Connecting Kids with Meals and picked-up at the Oregon Library.

Leaders say having to wrap-up meal distribution is sad because of how much they were able to provide for the community over the last two months.
