FOSTORIA (WTOL) - While a piece of Fostoria’s history is going away, more is actually being discovered and preserved.
Currently, the old St. Wendelin school building in Fostoria is in the process of being demolished. And while working a few weeks ago, crews with Posey excavation made a discovery: A cornerstone time capsule from 1909.
In retrospect, some older parishioners do recall hearing about a time capsule, but before demolition, no one remembered it was in place
.Inside was a local treasure of historical memorabilia including a pamphlet on the history of parish from 1904, a local elections ticket, letters and newspapers of the day. The local historical society had gone through and preserved items from the school that they thought was of historical significance, so this time capsule is a pleasant surprise.
“We already thought that we had what we could reasonably preserve from the building. And, this is a rare bonus, completely unexpected,” said Leonard Skonecki with the Fostoria Area Historical Society.
The time capsule items will be put on special display for this upcoming weekend Saturday and Sunday mass at St Wednelin Catholic Church.
