Learn how you can keep your dog safe during fireworks

If your dog is scared of fireworks, here are a few ways you can calm them down.

It's that time of year again when fireworks go off every night in celebration of the Fourth of July.

If you have pets at home, you may already know how they react to the loud noises. But not all dogs are the same..

"It's kind of knowing what your dog actually does, but there are dogs that will pant and pace and be just petrified and shake. Some actually can get themselves into trouble, I've had dogs go through windows," Dr. Anne Bergstrom of the West Toledo Animal Hospital said.

Veterinarians at the West Toledo Animal Hospital often recommend anti-anxiety medications and essential oils to the dogs that had issues in the past.

But if you are unsure how your dog will react, putting them in a quiet room like the basement is best.

"Anywhere you can get them where the sound and vibrations are muffled. And that's where sometimes leaving some noise on because when it's really quiet and there's a loud boom that's startling," Bergstrom said.

Additionally starting tomorrow and running through the Fourth of July, the Toledo Hemp Center is giving away free CBD dog treats. They also have oils that help dogs relax.

"Those offer quick relief. It's kind of like a reset when it comes to anxiety, calms the nervous system and has that antioxidants and properties that can help ease the stress with anxiety," Katie Laurie said.

Taking the treats up to two hours in advance gives dogs enough time to digest the treat and relax.

You can pick up treats at the Toledo Hemp Center on Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on the Fourth of July from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
