Flu season winding down, prepare for ticks and mosquitoes

After a long flu season, the Toledo Lucas County Health Department said now is the time to prepare for the arrival of ticks and mosquitoes since they can carry dangerous illnesses.

TOLEDO (WTOL) - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced this year’s flu season is breaking records as the longest in a decade and that’s no different in Toledo.

“We’ve had it longer around here. We’ve also seen we haven’t had the mortality that maybe in year’s past we’ve seen, which is a great thing,” Toledo Lucas County Health Commissioner, Eric Zgodzinski, said.

But now, the health department said is the time to prepare for the arrival of ticks and mosquitoes since they can carry dangerous illnesses.

"DEET helps. Your repellent. Making sure you’re wearing the right clothing when you go outside Making sure you check yourself when you come in. You’re checking your kids and pets too,” Zgodzinski said.

Additionally, the health department said to get rid of standing water and make sure your window screens are in good shape.

The Toledo Area Sanitary District is treating standing water for eggs and larvae right now and hasn’t seen any adult mosquitoes just yet, but they expect we’ll be fending them off in the next couple weeks.
