TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Friends of a 14-year-old boy stabbed to death Monday say he was trying to protect his mother and sisters.
Police say 16-year-old Devonte Brown stabbed 14-year-old Johnny Jones, his sister 16-year-old Joselyn Jones, and his mother 37-year-old Josie Thomas Monday.
Friends of the family say Joselyn was the dating the suspect and was trying to break things off with him when the stabbing occurred.
"For someone else to take someone's life it's not fair," said neighbor Heidi.
Family friends say that Josie and Joselyn are at Toledo Hospital. They say Josie is doing okay, but Joselyn is right now in a coma.
"It's just kind of heartbreaking to have such a good family go through this. To have that happen to them," said Heidi.
The coroner says Johnny died from multiple sharp force injuries.
"He was a hero, he protected his mom and his little sisters and other sister. So it wasn't fair for a young life to go, but he was a great kid," said Heidi.
She says her 12-year-old son was friends with Johnny and is not coping well with the news.
"He stayed the night numerous times, played together, swam together, so he's just going through the motions of realizing he isn't here," said Heidi.
Toledo police say Brown was also taken to Toledo Hospital after crashing his van in an attempt to get away from police Monday.
Police released his name Wednesday, when they issued a homicide warrant for him. He's being watched while in the hospital.
