Genoa Comets look to continue excellence, playoff runs

If you want a football program that dominates, look no further than Genoa. They have made the playoffs in 10 of the last 11 seasons. A tradition of excellence sells itself to the district.

GENOA, OH (WTOL) - If you want a football program that dominates, look no further than Genoa.

They have made the playoffs in 10 of the last 11 seasons. A tradition of excellence sells itself to the district.

Paul Patterson is in his fifth year as head coach.

"One of the things we always preach is family. That's one of our chants after we break from a huddle. I think this year's class is a pretty tight-knit group. We take in our freshman now to be a part of the family. One of the things to take away is that it's such a great family," said Patterson.

They have a great group of players.

Quarterback Jake Plantz went down in the fourth game of the season with a knee injury. The Comets moved players around and went on to finish with an 8-2 record qualifying for the playoffs once again.

Plantz is healthy now, and will likely continue his athletic career as a college basketball player. He is a player to watch.

"I think we're doing a pretty good job. I think Novotny's doing a good job in filling that role. I think Coach Patterson and the coaching staff are doing a great job noticing the weaker parts of our game and getting it up to speed. I'm really excited to see how this year goes," said Plantz.

Added to the mix is Andrew Bench, a 6'5" defensive end and a tight end being recruited by several Division I colleges.

"It's a great feeling coming out here and throwing on the pads again. It's a great feeling as a family. It's going to be a great season," said Bench.

Genoa is loaded once again, and considered a favorite to win the Northern Buckeye Conference (NBC).

The Comets open their season at Columbus Bishop Ready.
