107 confirmed COVID-19 cases among Lucas Co. nursing homes

Data released by the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department Wednesday shows there are 30 long-term care facilities in the county that have at least 1 positive case.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department released data on coronavirus cases in long-term care facilities Wednesday afternoon, per the Ohio Department of Health new guidelines.

There are at least 107 COVID0-19 confirmed cases among 30 Lucas County nursing homes, according to the health department. The case could be a staffer or a resident.

"My level of concern is at the most high right now because I work with these individuals every day," one nursing home employee told WTOL anonymously out of fear for retribution.

This person said he is an employee at one of the 30 Lucas County facilities where a COVID-19 case has been identified.

"We're seeing a definite, I don't want to say issue but a definite concern in our nursing homes," Lucas County Health Commissioner Eric Zgodzinski said.

The 107 cases make up roughly 1/6 of all confirmed cases in Lucas County.

It's unclear how it breaks down because county officials wouldn't specify how many cases each establishment has, despite the public importance to understand the virus' spread.

"This is a nasty virus and it spreads quickly in those settings where you're taking care of critical patients," Zgodzinski said.

Zgodzinski said despite the stark numbers, help is on the way.

"You're going to see in the near future, if you would, let's call it a strike team task force, a concerted effort to see what's going on in those nursing homes and figure out how we can help them better," he said.

That's welcome news for this employee, who demands more information be released immediately.

"We're not protecting ourselves if we don't know that these patients have this virus already or someone in the facility has this virus already," he said.

WTOL 11 has filed a public records request with the Ohio Department of Health asking for statewide data on nursing homes and long term care facilities. So far, that hasn't been fulfilled.
