FINDLAY, Ohio — Usually Memorial Day is a chance for communities to come together. But right now, large gatherings are prohibited.
However The City of Findlay is still honoring their fallen veterans while keeping the community safe.
Main Street in Findlay usually hosts the annual Memorial Day parade, but with coronavirus still active, the city and Hancock County have decided to cancel this year's parade.
Instead, a 30-minute video has been produced that will air online and on local radio.
It will include messages from Mayor Christina Muryn and Hancock County Veterans Services president, a prayer, a wreath laying at the city's memorial and will end with a community wide moment of silence.
The cancellation of the parade is a sign of these difficult times, but Muryn said the current pandemic can't take away the meaning of the holiday.
"You know, it's really unfortunate but it's what we need to do right now to make sure our community stays strong long term. And so hopefully people take it as an opportunity to reflect on what's really important and it's not all about a parade, it's about remembering those who were lost," said Muryn.
The City of Findlay's virtual Memorial Day celebration will go live online at 9 a.m.
