TOLEDO, Ohio — As more places open up, you may be ready to venture out for different summer activities. Doctors want to remind you to continue to prioritize your health by wearing a mask and maintaining social distancing. But with high temperatures on the way, is wearing a mask the best thing to do?
"We know that masks can feel uncomfortable, they don't reduce the amount of air exchange by a significant degree where they'd be dangerous to you. But they can feel obstructive, they can feel intrusive to our daily activities" said Dr. Brian Kaminski, an emergency room doctor at Promedica.
When you are out in bigger crowds, recommendations for wearing a mask in the heat does not change. If for some reason you are unable to wear a mask, the best way to protect yourself and others is to stay at least six feet apart.
Although it may be uncomfortable, especially when it's hot out, experts say it continues to be one of the best ways to contain COVID-19, while still going about everyday life.
"In our culture, masks are new. So we're not used to it, were not accustomed to wearing masks. In other cultures it is often a part of everyday activity. Especially if you're sick," said Dr. Kaminski.
If you have breathing problems or are nervous to wear a mask when it's hot out, staying inside or away from people outside is your best bet.
