Leaders from the City of Toledo, Lucas County, Toledo-Lucas County Health Dept., and Toledo-Lucas County Public Library released details Monday about a new initiative to help people sign up for COVID-19 vaccination appointments.
Dr. Eric Zgodzinski, Health Commissioner at the health department, Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, Lucas County Commissioner Tina Skeldon-Wozniak, and Jason Kucsma, library director, announced Lucas County residents can sign up for vaccine appointments at any library branch.
Additionally, it was announced Walmart will receive over 1,000 doses and will administer the vaccine at five locations in the area.
Vaccinations at Walmart begin Monday, March 8 according to a Walmart official who runs the testing clinics locally.
"This is another tool in our community to get people vaccinated," Zgodzinski said.
Lucas County residents can visit any library branch to schedule an appointment, or call 419-259-5200. Kucsma said staff will be ready to help.
"It's been inspiring to see the work being done by our colleagues," he said. "We're really pleased to be able to work with the city and health department to increase sign ups. We want to be helpful in ways the community needs us to be helpful."
Kapszukiewicz applauded the library for their cooperation, and said that doesn't happen in every city. He said libraries are among the institutions most embedded into the community.
“The Toledo Lucas County Public Library stepping up in this way to serve is another in a long line of programs and services the library has provided to our community for years,” said Mayor Kapszukiewicz. “I urge people to take advantage of this opportunity to get a vaccine appointment."
Also, on Monday, Lucas County Walmart stores will be added to the county’s list of COVID-19 vaccine providers.
Zgodzinski said Walmart will administer 1,100 doses between the locations on Glendale Avenue and Central Avenue in Toledo; and stores in Holland and Oregon. Residents can make appointments at Walmart.com.
Zgodzinski also revealed Lucas County is expecting to receive about 100 doses of the recently approved Johnson & Johnson vaccine this week. He also said he believes Gov. Mike DeWine is considering expanding the list of eligible residents who can receive the vaccine.
