TOLEDO, Ohio — In the continuing quest for fitness and health, it turns out that one of our biggest adversaries might be lurking right in our beverage cups.
Many of us are unwittingly consuming hundreds of extra calories through our favorite drinks, said Kelly Heidbreder, the Super Fitness Weight Loss Challenge host.
"Did you know that sometimes you drink most of those hidden calories?," Heidbreder said. "Your favorite coffee shop might be serving you somewhere around 500 calories just in one of your sweet coffee drinks topped with whipped cream."
Protein meal-replacement drinks also can deliver more hidden calories than some consumers realize. While they may seem like a healthy option, with flavors mimicking mocha coffee and boasting protein infusion, they can pack more than 400 calories per serving.
"That’s OK if you don’t eat anything until your evening meal, but most people drink this shake and still eat breakfast and lunch," she said.
Even seemingly innocuous energy drinks aren't spared from the calorie trap. Loaded with sugar and salt, they can rival regular or diet soda in terms of caloric content.
"Remember, reducing calories and increasing your exercise are sure-fire ways to drop pounds and inches," Heidbreder said. "We want you to stick to a meal plan that includes 2,000 a day. So if you have a sugary dessert coffee in the morning and a soda for lunch, you have just consumed half of your daily calories right there in your cup. That doesn’t leave much for your evening meal."
In light of these revelations, nutritionists recommend opting for water instead. Not only does it keep you hydrated, but it also helps you feel full throughout the day. If you don't want to drink plain water, add some fresh fruit or fruit juice or a sugar-free flavor packet, Heidbreder said.
As the battle for fitness continues, it's becoming increasingly clear that vigilance in monitoring what we drink is just as crucial as watching what we eat. So the next time you reach for that sweetened beverage, remember. those hidden calories might be sabotaging your weight loss efforts.
