TOLEDO, Ohio — As our WTOL 11 weather team has been forecasting, extremely cold temperatures are on their way to northwest Ohio.
For those spending time outdoors, exposure to the cold can potentially lead to frostbite or hypothermia. The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department is sharing tips on how to stay safe and warm during the extreme cold.
According to the health department, it's important to watch for signs of frostbite. People are encouraged to seek warm shelter if they experience early signs including red or pale skin, prickling and numbness.
TLCHD said to limit time outdoors in cold, wet or windy weather and to pay attention to weather forecasts and wind chill readings. Exposed skin can develop frostbite in a matter of minutes in very cold, windy weather.
What you are wearing also plays a factor in staying safe while dealing with cold temps. The health department encourages people to dress in several layers of loose, warm clothing and wear a hat or headband that fully covers their ears. They also said to wear mittens rather than gloves and wear socks and sock liners that fit well, wick moisture and provide insulation.
When traveling in cold weather, bring emergency supplies and warm clothing in case you become stranded, TLCHD said. If traveling in remote territory, tell others your route and expected return date.
What you eat and drink also plays a factor in staying warm and safe in cold weather.
The health department said to not drink alcohol if you plan to be outdoors as it can cause your body to lose heat faster. They also said to eat well-balanced meals and stay hydrated. Doing this before you go out in the cold will help you stay warm, according to the TLCHD.
