TIFFIN, Ohio — The video game industry is currently making more money than television and film combined.
That is is why a local university is adding video game development as a major.
Heidelberg University has offered a video game development minor for a few years now, but it is so popular that there has been a huge waiting list.
The university has decided to expand the program into a full fledged major.
Students will learn not only the technical aspects of coding and scripting events for the programming, but also script writing, art, internships at video game companies, and even study video game ethics.
With the new major comes new renovations to Krieg Hall as well. As the wing will be completely remodeled from the building frame into one large, modern work space for students.
And with Heidelberg being a smaller university, the program will offer students a more well rounded understanding of the art of creating a video game.
"How to make something fun is hard, and you have to use many many disciplines. So we go to the music school for composition, or the business school or the art school. All of of these different schools that we know because this is such a small school that we that at a technical school or a huge university wouldn't have those connections," said Nathan Cutietta, director of Heidelberg's gaming, Esports, and media center.
The renovations to the building and the setup for the new classes will be ready to offer the new video game development major for the upcoming 2019-2020 school year.
