How to detect a gas leak and keep your home safe

After last week's house explosions in Massachusetts, it's becoming more important for homeowners to know how to detect a gas leak.

BOWLING GREEN, OH (WTOL) - After last week's house explosions in Massachusetts, it's becoming more important for homeowners to know how to detect a gas leak.

The Bowling Green Fire Department is also encouraging their local residents to be cautious.

Last week, a major gas leak forced crews to evacuate local businesses as a safety precaution.

Crews from Columbia Gas have been working here in downtown Bowling Green without any major issues.

There are some key things homeowners can do to prevent gas leaks.

"One of the things we always talk about is making sure that you change the batteries in your smoke detectors. That is a very important aspect. Also carbon monoxide detectors," said Bowling Green Fire Chief Bill Moorman.

Firefighters recommend getting your chimneys cleaned once a year and not burning candles in unattended rooms.

If you think you have been exposed to gas, firefighters say get outside and call 9-11.

"There can be some medical effects with that like headaches, nausea, vomiting, those types of things. If you have any of those types of symptoms don't hesitate to call us immediately. We prefer to come out there and find out there's nothing wrong than wait and have something bad happen," said Moorman.
