TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - The body of an inmate accused of committing one of Toledo's most brutal, high-profile murders was found in his cell at the Lucas County Jail Thursday night .
According to the Lucas County Sheriff's Department, Elhadi Robbins, 47, was found after he collapsed in a shower around 7:15 p.m. Corrections officers at the jail attempted to revive him with CPR and Toledo firefighters took over when they arrived at the jail. Robbins was taken to a Toledo hospital and pronounced dead shortly after 8 p.m.
His family says he had a heart condition.
After reviewing video surveillance, police do not suspect foul play because no one was in the showers the same time as Robbins. His body is now at the Lucas County Morgue, where an autopsy will be performed.
Robbins was incarcerated on a theft conviction and failure to notify as a sex offender. In 2006, he was convicted for the illegal use of a 5-year-old boy in nudity-oriented material. He served six months behind bars and was supposed to register as a sex offender.
Robbins was also accused of killing Cindy Sumner, 20, during the summer of 2009. Sumner disappeared in 2005. Her body was found inside a vacant warehouse on Elm Street in north Toledo years later.
Police said the two were friends. Sumner had muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy. She also had the mental capacity of a 12-year-old.
"He took my only baby I could ever have. But I got closure now," said Mary Sumner, Cindy's mother.
Sumner is still devastated by her daughter's murder. She does not work and is being treated for depression.
"Kind of stunned. Now I can get some closure about it, because Cindy can rest in peace, now that her killer is finally gone," she said.
In February 2010, Robbins pleaded not guilty to the murder.
A murder trial was set to begin with jury selection April 8.
Sumner says she is moving on with her life and taking things one day at a time.
