TOLEDO, Ohio — 11 Investigates has brought you a number of stories regarding David Broadway, the man accused of scamming multiple elderly people out of thousands of dollars for driveway and home improvement jobs.
Our team has been getting questions about how much these jobs should have really cost, so we found another contractor to give another estimate.
Jim Mohr, who works with Charles Concrete Construction, came with our crew to Lowell Hemmelgarn's home to see how much the job should have cost him. Hemmelgarn paid Broadway $6,000 for a driveway improvement that was poorly done.
Mohr said the work done on Hemmelgarn's driveway in June by Broadway was an attempt as a skim coat, but it needed to be resurfaced.
Hemmelgarn said Broadway and his crew finished the job in about an hour. Mohr said for his team, it would have taken three days and about 12 hours total.
So, what would Mohr have quoted?
After measuring Hemmelgarn's driveway and calculating the cost per square foot, Mohr quoted him $2,650.
As far as the $6,000 that Hemmelgarn paid Broadway, Mohr responded "my heart goes out to you, that is unconscionable."
It is a good idea to get a second opinion in situations involving home improvements and repairs to make sure you are getting a fair price, Mohr advised.
