City changes signs to reduce crashes at curve in Point Place, residents say more is needed | Call 11 for Action

Residents are concerned it will take more changes to get people to slow down and stop crashing into properties.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The city of Toledo said it is addressing a problem area in Point Place after residents said the area was a hotbed for crashes. However, people who live and work near the curve at 131st Street and Edgewater Drive think more needs to be done.

Suzanne and Ralph Kern contacted Call 11 for Action in January, fed up with multiple crashes in front of their home. Call 11 for Action brought the problem to the city, which told us it would perform a study on the area.

Jeremy Mikolajczyk, Interim Director of Transportation for the city of Toledo, said the study is complete. Mikolajczyk said the city installed an "advanced yield warning sign" on southbound Edgewater and changed out the night arrow for northbound 131st to a "high intensity" sign.

Call 11 for Action visited the area again on Tuesday to speak with residents and see the changes. John Pauwel, who has lived there for 85 years, pointed out a car speeding on the corner.

"There you go," he said. "That tells you something doesn't it? That's just the start, but so far, people aren't seeing any changes. When he comes back, he'll come flying through here. They don't slow down coming that way at all."

Pauwel and Shawn Adams, who own a boat repair business on the corner, said it will take more to slow people down.

"What they need to do is have a cop out here once in a while and sit and watch what they're doing and start ticketing them," Pauwel said.

"They've flown through here and ended up in their yard a couple times in fine weather," said Adams. "It's like 'Frogger' right here."

Mikolajczyk said the city will make sure the yield sign is not blocked by bushes once they're grown in and is also looking into the fence line at the corner to see if it encroaches into the right of way. He said the traffic department will continue monitoring the area.
