South Toledo sidewalk getting repaired after years of being damaged

James Bliss reached out to Call 11 for Action after months of trying to get a sidewalk in his neighborhood fixed.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Residents of a south Toledo neighborhood are happy to have their concerns about a sidewalk on Schneider Road near Byrne Road addressed by the city.

Growing tree roots caused the sidewalk to have a hump in the middle of it, making it difficult for people in motorized scooters to use.

"I go to bed thinking about how I can go up there and chop this thing down," James Bliss told WTOL 11 last week.

He uses his motorized scooter on the street due to the sidewalks conditions.

Bliss even said someone got hurt by tipping over in their scooter because of the sidewalk.

But, he was happy to see repairs on the sidewalk.

"My dreams came true, but it wasn't me doing the cutting," Bliss said.

The city of Toledo started taking the trees down Thursday morning and will soon start getting the sidewalk fixed.

Bliss said he's been calling the city about the issue for three months and is glad to see work being done.

"They were out here almost all day long except for a half hour when they took a lunch break and that was it," Bliss said. "They did a good job."

But not everyone in the apartment complex is happy about the trees coming down, he said.

Bliss said some people will miss the shade the huge trees brought. However, he believes safety is more important than shade.

The area is partly owned by the city and partly owned by the nearby apartment complexes, which will be sharing the costs of the fix, a city spokesperson told WTOL 11.

"If it wasn't for Channel 11 news bringing this to people's attention, this would've never gotten done," Bliss said. "I really tried hard, and it didn't do anything until you guys got involved with it."
