SYLVANIA, Ohio (WTOL) - A northwest Ohio family who helped establish the national World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. got special recognition Sunday.
At the American Legion post on Centennial in Sylvania, the Roger Durbin family received a rare book called "Tribute," which is a collection of photographs and history of the World War II Memorial.
Former Veteran Roger Durbin from Berkey, Ohio helped come up with the memorial idea, and Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur helped pave the way in Washington.
Roger's granddaughter, Melissa Growden, was also a part of building the memorial, and she accepted the gift. "We receive phone calls, emails... People stop us on the street to say thank you. That is just very humbling... very gratifying. That's what my grandfather would have wanted," says Growden.
Rep. Marcy Kaptur attended the event. "The Durbin family has just been the continuing link," she tells us, "and that's what communities should be about. It should be about family. It should be about neighbors. It should be about caring about one another."
Honor Flight of Northwest Ohio is taking veterans for one-day trips to see the memorial all funded by donations.
