SYLVANIA, Ohio — A 15-year-old is dead after jumping into the Centennial Quarry and not resurfacing, according to the Lucas County Coroners' Office.
Someone at the scene jumped in to pull Pedro Salinas from the water, coroner investigator Steve Kahli said.
Kahli said the teen was submerged for at least two to three minutes.
Officers were called to the scene in Sylvania around 5 p.m Monday afternoon.
The caller said "someone was underwater for an extended amount of time."
Salinas was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Sylvania Schools said their thoughts and prayers go out to the boy's family, and offer resources for children who may be affected by the news.
It is unclear if the boy went to Sylvania Schools.
An autopsy is being conducted.
Salinas was at the quarry Monday with a chaperone and other members of a group home in which he was living. He was placed with the Ohio Teaching Family Association in Swanton after his June 19 release.
Salinas served a sentence after pleading guilty to murder in juvenile court after dropping a sandbag from an overpass on a vehicle on I-75. The sandbag killed Marquise Byrd, 22, in December, 2017.
Sylvania Recreation Corporation issued a statement Tuesday afternoon saying they are "deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred at Centennial Quarry.
"Our continued thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family, as well as those who have been impacted in any way. We would like to thank all of the responders who so courageously tried to save the victim during the incident."
The statement also said the Centennial Quarry will remain closed Tuesday and that Sylvania Recreation has no further comments "during this time of mourning."
