SWANTON, Ohio — The 180th Fighter Wing will conduct two training exercises Thursday: an active shooter training and routine night flying operations.

According to a press release from the 180th Fighter Wing, which is an Ohio Air National Guard base in Swanton, airmen will engage in a no-notice active shooter training to test their abilities to "react, respond, neutralize threats and provide life-saving medical care."

The training will begin at noon and will last through 5 p.m. In addition to an increased presence of airmen and base personnel, local law enforcement and emergency responders will also be participating in the exercise, the 180th said.

During that time, the public may see what the 180th described as increased personnel activity and lights. Residents may also hear announcements made from a loud speakers, sirens and simulated gunfire. The activity, however, is only an exercise, and there is no threat.

The 180th is also conducting a routine night flight operation Thursday. According to the release, the training, which is weather-permitting, tests personnel on their overall readiness. During this exercise, residents may see or hear the base's F-16 fighter jets, and may also see the use of flares, until about 11:30 p.m.

The base's training operations generated a lot of reaction on June 12 and 13, when flight exercises caused sonic booms that were heard around northwest Ohio.
