2 mosquito pools in Ottawa County test positive for West Nile Virus

The Ottawa County Health Department said they are monitoring the situation closely through surveillance.

OTTAWA COUNTY, Ohio — The Ottawa County Health Department announced Tuesday that they have identified two positive mosquito pools with West Nile Virus in the county.

The health department said they are continuing to monitor the situation closely through surveillance and will provide updates.

OCHD provided the following tips to help protect yourself from West Nile Virus:

  • Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Apply it before heading outdoors
  • Dress smart. Wear long sleeves, pants and socks to minimize exposed skin
  • Stay indoors during peak mosquito activity times, usually dawn and dusk
  • Check for standing water around your home and eliminate it, as it serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes
  • To prevent mosquitoes from entering your living spaces, keep windows and doors screened
  • If camping or spending time outside, sleep under mosquito nets for protection
  • Support community efforts to control mosquito populations and report any stagnant water sources
