TOLEDO (WTOL) - On Saturday, local Cub and Girl Scouts cleaned up the intersection of Alexis and Secor where the weed first sprouted.
They came with brushes and brooms to clean up what had become a popular holiday gathering spot.
One thing they weren’t able to do was sweep away memories of the Christmas Weed.
“I think it was a joy thing. Step always from society for a few seconds and bring joy,” said Christina Willhite.
The gangly, decorated Christmas Weed was first spotted two weeks ago.
Since then thousands came by to add more ornaments, tinsel and lights to the weed and intersection.
The weed became the symbol of goodness in Toledo.
“I think it meant that we need to bring our community together and get us together to do something and it really did,” said Emma Straughan.
Remaining food on Saturday was gathered up and sent to a soup kitchen.
The ornaments went to non-profit agencies.
“I think it was real good because we got service hours and helped the community,” said Daniel Clark.
As for the weed itself it was stolen on Friday.
Still scouts are proud to call Toledo their hometown.
“The Christmas spirit and the meaning of Christmas,” said Grayden Cooper.
Alexis and Secor once again looks like any other busy intersection in Toledo.
But everybody hopes the magic of Christmas returns next year to bring folks together again somewhere in Toledo, even if it’s not a weed.
