Hancock County senior center named best in Ohio

The senior center, which had a large expansion completed in 2021, was honored by the Ohio Association of Senior Centers.

FINDLAY, Ohio — A growing organization in Hancock County has been named the best of its kind in Ohio.

Founded in 1970, 50 North in Findlay is a senior center serving anyone 50 and older in Hancock County.

Last week, 50 North was named Ohio Senior Center of the Year by the Ohio Association of Senior Centers.

Executive Director Carolyn Copus said the honor is thanks in part to the great staff and volunteers, but also all of the enrichment opportunities offered to members.

"We have a tremendous program, great activities," Copus said. "We have three social workers that can help people with their needs of transitioning from work to retirement, from good condition to chronic condition."

50 North expanded its campus in 2021 and the facility is now busier than ever with exercise, yoga, crafts, pool, cards, meals and even at-home chores.

Findlay mayor Christina Muryn said having the best senior center in the state shows that the Flag City community cares for every generation of resident.

"Help keep each other young, help educate on what it means to transition into that next phase of life," said Muryn. "But I think the most important thing is, I think, keeping people healthy and helping support their mental health."

Copus said as younger generations age and become members of 50 North, leaders of the senior center listen to all of the new ideas and work to incorporate them into programming so everyone feels welcome.

"Learn something new, get out here and move, do whatever at your level you can do, but just come," Copus said. "We know socialization is important, we know people like to socialize in different ways. So we talk to our members. 'What do you want? What can we do to enrich your life, keeping you active?'"

50 North will be closed on April 8 during the total solar eclipse, but they still wanted their members to get some enrichment through this event.

The senior center will be inviting the Imagination Station and members from the University of Findlay to give a presentation later this month.
