TIFFIN, Ohio — Aqua Ohio is notifying Tiffin residents by mail if they have service lines "made of lead, galvanized steel or unknown material," the drinking and wastewater utility company said in a press release on Tuesday.

The letters are being sent to give tips on limiting lead exposure and inform customers that Aqua is working with the state and federal Environmental Protection agencies to identify unknown materials in service lines and replace ones made of lead or galvanized steel "at no direct cost," according to the company.

Residents are not being asked to take action. Locations with service lines made of other materials won't be notified.

"Aqua takes steps to prevent lead from leaching into the water they distribute and conducts routine tests to confirm that lead levels remain below actionable levels. Nonetheless, Aqua is working with the Ohio EPA and USEPA to eliminate lead lines," the press release states.

"Research has linked lead with serious health complications, especially in young children. In Ohio, lead service lines have been prohibited for use in plumbing since 1988. Homes built earlier could still have lead service lines," Aqua added.

The letter provided by Aqua is included below:
