Popular arch at Utah national recreation area collapses

No injuries were reported as a result of the collapse, according to the National Park Service.

LAKE POWELL, Ariz. — The "Double Arch" feature seen in Rock Creek Bay at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area has apparently collapsed into the water.

National Park Service rangers have recently confirmed that the arch was no longer standing as of Aug. 8 and may have collapsed due to changing water levels and erosion.

“This event serves as a reminder of our responsibility and need to protect the mineral resources surrounding Lake Powell," Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Superintendent Michelle Kerns said in a statement.

No injuries were reported in relation to the collapse.

NPS said the arch formed from 190-million-year-old Navajo sandstone from the late Triassic and early Jurassic periods.

The feature, also known as the "Toilet Bowl" and "Hole in the Roof," has become a popular attraction for visitors of Lake Powell. Guests will sometimes post pictures online of themselves jumping from the arch and into the water.
