Bedford School Board member censured, asked to resign following social media posts

The censure by the school board of education is a public acknowledgment that he violated board policy, but doesn't limit his power.

LAMBERTVILLE, Mich. — Bedford School Board Member Todd Bruning has officially been censured and asked to resign from his position.

Bruning is accused of posting racist, sexist, and homophobic content on his personal Facebook page.

The censure by the school board of education is a public acknowledgment that he violated board policy, however it does not limit his power as a board member in any way.

That would require a recall vote or for Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to intervene.

The resolutions were introduced by Board President Lisa McCaig.

The votes for censure and asking for his resignation were both 5 to 2 with Bruning and his mother, who is also a board member, voting against the resolutions.

A Change.org petition asking for Bruning's resignation now has more than 6,500 signatures as of the time of this writing.

WTOL spoke with Bruning at the beginning of June.

Posts that are raising eyebrows include pictures with comments about black children or burning down a mosque. WTOL asked him how he felt about students potentially reading these posts.

"They get so butthurt over memes that are a joke, Jesus, wait until they get out into the real world and see how life is," Bruning said.

Bruning also said he "could care less" about whether or not he remained on the board stating it's not a high paying job and that all the money he makes goes right back into paying for kids' school lunches.

Bruning is also up for election to be a township trustee this fall. His Facebook page is currently set to private.
