TOLEDO, Ohio — Editor's note: This story has been updated to include Joe Boyle's obituary.
A beloved teacher with Toledo Public Schools has died following a lengthy battle with cancer.
Joe Boyle, who taught history at Waite High School, died on Tuesday, according to a post on his X account, formerly known as Twitter where he had a large following.
He was known for his love of history, superheroes and Cleveland sports, but he also loved the students and staff he worked with at school every day.
WTOL 11 recently featured Boyle in a story after he credited the school nurse with saving his life after he began to have a medical emergency while at work.
He said that he was diagnosed with cancer nearly 13 years ago and was very open about his battle with it.
"I have kidney cancer that's metastasized from top to bottom. Brain, lip, lungs, thumb, hips, leg and I think that's it," Boyle told WTOL 11 earlier this month.
But he didn't let it get in his way when it came to teaching and impacting students in northwest Ohio.
Toledo Public Schools released this statement on Boyle's death:
"Joe Boyle was the epitome of an amazing husband, father, educator and fighter. He shared his story of struggles and success with everyone who asked. Those who knew him will never forget his dedication to his family, his passion for the past, his sense of humor and his dedication to Cleveland sports teams. He will be missed dearly but his memory will live on through those who knew him."
